Burwood Brickworks Public Realm, Melbourne
Burwood Brickworks in Victoria is the first retail shopping centre to achieve the Living Building Challenge® Petal Certification. This is the worlds most rigorous measure of the built environment administered by The International Living Future Institute. We were appointed to design & implement an external seating package to respond to the needs of social distancing that offered more options for seating & planting to support the food retailers in an outdoor environment. In addition to this, it was identified that there was a need to “soften” the external space with the overall designs & furniture selection to encourage dwell time, comfort, accessibility & socialisation. All proposed furniture designs & selections had to comply with the Living Building Challenge requirements, considering materiality & fixing methods to maximise sustainability.
